What to Do if Another Driver Hits Your Car and Drives Off

How to Report a Hit and Run to Police and Insurance

You’re waiting at a junction or parked outside a shop when suddenly, another vehicle collides with yours. Before you can exchange details, the driver has vanished. No apology, no contact information.

Sadly, incidents like are more common that you might think. Often referred to as hit-and-runs, they are not only frustrating but also a criminal offence under the Road Traffic Act 1988.

At Grove & Dean, we want our clients to know exactly what steps to take if they ever face this situation.

damage caused by a hit and run driver

Put safety first

  • Stop safely and turn on your hazard lights.
  • Check yourself, your passengers, and anyone nearby for injuries.
  • If the road is blocked or someone is hurt, dial 999 immediately.
  • Never try to chase the other vehicle, it can put you at greater risk.

Collect vital evidence

We know it’s difficult but, if possible, make note of:

  • The registration number of the other driver (even part of it helps)
  • The make, model, and colour of their car
  • Where and when the collision happened, and the direction the vehicle took
  • Distinct features such as damage, stickers, or business logos

Also:

  • Photograph your car and the wider scene
  • Save dashcam footage if available
  • Take contact details of any witnesses

The more you can record at the scene, the stronger your claim will be.

Inform the police

Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act requires you to report the incident within 24 hours if the other driver fails to stop. Call 101 or go to your local police station. You’ll be given a crime reference number. Keep this safe as your insurer will request it.

Reporting can also be done online at police.uk.

Notify your insurer quickly

The sooner your insurer knows about the collision, the sooner they can help. If you’re a Grove & Dean customer, please give us a call on 01708 925 058 as soon as possible.

Even if the other driver is never traced, your insurer can still help. They may pursue a non-fault claim on your behalf and could work with the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) to recover your losses under the Uninsured Drivers Scheme. More details are available at mib.org.uk.

Our reassurance

Hit-and-runs are upsetting and unfair, but you won’t have to deal with the aftermath alone. With the right insurance partner, you’ll have expert support from the moment it happens through to your claim being resolved.
