One of the most important parameters is ATV insurance, which needs to be at least third party cover. If you do not have quad insurance, then you cannot legally ride your quad bike on the road.

If you are already an owner or soon to be owner of a quad bike and wish to use it on the road, then you need to make sure that certain rules are met. You can find the full set of rules and regulations on the .GOV website.
However, we have pieced together some of the main rules and regulations that you need to adhere to, so that you can use your quad bike on the road.
- First up is making sure that the quad bike is registered with the DVLA and has both front and back number plates, matching to the registration given by the DVLA. If your bike is not registered, you can do it on the DVLA website found here.
- Make sure that the bike has a valid MOT certificate if they are more than three years old.
- Must have a full UK driver licence or a category B1 licence if it was issued before January 1997.
- Must hold a valid quad insurance, this needs to be at least third party cover.
- Finally, make sure that the quad is taxed correctly.
Not all quad bikes meet the road safety standards and cannot be modified for road use. However, you can apply for ‘type approval’ with the DVLA to see if your quad can be made road legal, you can find their online page here.
If you intend to use your quad bike for agricultural, horticulture and forestry purposes then you still need to register it as a light agricultural vehicle for road use with the DVLA found here. Using the quad for these purposes means that you do not need a valid MOT but will still need to have front and rear number plates, third party insurance and lights if it is used on the road at night.
If you are using the quad bike for agricultural, horticulture and forestry purposes then you won’t generally have to pay vehicle tax. However, you may be required to pay vehicle tax, depending on the class needed. For example; class for bikes on the road. If you need this class, then you will be required to pay vehicle tax.
Regardless if you use the quad for agricultural, horticulture and forestry purposes on the road or not, you will not be allowed to carry any passengers.
